PA-101 — Presetting 101: The Foundation of Modern Machining

Modern machining moves fast. Spindles are expensive. Downtime is even more expensive. And the smallest error in tool measurement can ripple into scrap, rework, and missed delivery dates.

That’s where presetting comes in.

What Is Tool Presetting?

Tool presetting is the process of measuring and setting up cutting tools outside of the CNC machine, before they ever reach the spindle.

Instead of loading a tool into the machine and “touching off” to find its exact length and diameter, a presetter measures that information in advance. The data is then entered manually or transferred digitally into the CNC control.

In short, presetting moves setup work offline so your machine tools can stay focused on what they do best: cutting parts.

Why Presetting Matters

At first glance, presetting may seem like a small step in the process. In reality, it plays a major role in shop performance.

Every minute a spindle is measuring tools instead of cutting parts is lost production time. By measuring tools offline, presetting:
